Energy Clock

by Jason on March 5, 2010

Ever wondered what the current energy consumption in the U.S. was? Look no further! GridWatch presents the Real-time Energy Clock widget. You can see it in action on our sidebar (on the right >).

What does it do?

This widget keeps track of the current cumulative electricity consumption in the U.S. Each number displayed on the counter represents the amount of electricity consumed in Gigawatt Hours since the beginning of 2010. We also break down the numbers into their respective categories (renewable, non-renewable and total). Figures are approximated. Data source: doe.gov.

How do I put in on my site?

To embed the Real-time Energy Clock widget on your website, blog, etc, follow these simple instructions:

  1. Place the following HTML code where you wish to place the widget.

    <a href="http://gridwatch.org/energyclock"><img src="http://gridwatch.org/widgets/energyclock.php"></a>

  2. That’s it! The Real-time Energy Clock widget should appear on your site.

Future Capabilities

We’re currently working on a couple different things to improve the energy clock:

  1. A streamlined “resize” feature to help the widget adapt to other sites
  2. A dynamic ticker (updates in realtime without having to refresh the browser)
  3. An ad-free version of the clock for paying users

Note: Please check back regularly to see the progress on this widget. You could also follow our progress on twitter. We appreciate your willingness to help spread the word! If you have any questions, comments, etc., please send us an email. Thanks!
